Despite a brave performance on Thursday 19th June BRCC U18 Girls team were edged out of it in a tight and tense game at Coutance Way.
With skipper Danielle Dudley loosing the toss for the third consecutive time BRCC were invited to bat in very blustury conditions. Despite the early loss of opener Florence Haines for 5, fellow opener Chloe Dinsdale (15) was joined by the inform Naomi Pratt. (28 Not out), and the team stuggled to deliver a total for 58 in the 20 overs. Some excellent bowling and fielding from the vastly more experienced Pool side managed to contain BRCC, and with the loss of Chloe and the retirement of Naomi, the middle order stuggled to lay the bat on the ball and a number of wickets fell cheaply. The effort of new recruit Beth Ruddock were noteable as she managed to chip in with a couple of runs at the end.
Defending 58 for 5 was alwyas likley to be difficult. BRCC needed to bowl and field well and also, given the experience in the Pool team take wickets. As BRCC took to the field the temperature dropped and the wind chill was to prove to be a contributing factor.
An agressive opening spell from Naoimi Pratt (4-015-3) backed up by a very economical spell at the other end by Florence Haines (4-1-6-0) managed to build pressure. The tight bowling was continued by MVP Emmy Bryant (4-1-7-0) and some exellent ground fielding, including some noteable work behind the timbers from the Laura Scarlett who is taking to the roll admirably and Justine Dudley who pulled off some fantsatic stops on the leg side.
With BRCC unable to grab much needed wickets Pool seemed certain to grab the total with plenty to spare, but some tight overs from Chloe and Lauren Oxtoby built the pressure and when Pools top scorer was out, caught brilliantly by Robyn Braithwaite off the bowling of Lauren, Pool needed 3 runs off the last over. It was anybodies game until Pool managed to scamble home with 3 balls to spare.
This was agame Pool must have been confident of wining easily and they must have felt doubly confident when they set out to chase down a meagre 58. They were mightily relived to get over the finish line BRCC girsl stuck to their task brilliantly in very difficult cricket conditions and never gave up. Coach Brown was delighted with the effort and the improvement shown by all the girls. Credit also goes to new recruites Cat Whitehead and Beth Ruddock who stepped in at short notice and neither looked out of place in the side.
The girsl take on Leeds Owls at BRCC on Wednesday in a league fixture and if they can show the same level of commitment and effort should be in with a good chance of retaining their un-beaten league record.
BRCC 58 for 20 ovs; N Pratt 28* C Dinsdale 15,
