Friday evening saw the U13's travel to Guiseley.

This was always going to prove a difficultfixture with regulars Moorehouse, Marshall and Masterson not available. After some team complications BRCC were sent into bat on a damp pitch. Tarek Moursi once again looked very comfortable before he was dismissed for 22. His opening partner Josh Stephens played a very steady innings and retired on 29. The 2 openers shared in a 58 run opening partnership.

Gus Hastings once again looked a proven number 3, scoring a well crafted 18. Josh Crane took the attack to the bowlers in the later stages of the game.

BRCC closed their innings with a season best 107-3

In reply, Gus Hastings took an early wicket and for a while BRCC kept the scoring below the required run rate. After a rain delay of 15 minutes Guiseley acceleratedand knocked off the runs with 4 over to spare for the loss of 5 wickets. The pick of the Rhydding bowlers was Howard Fojt with his very accurate and difficult to play off spin.

Interviewed after the game Coach AJ commented "Guiseley are a very well organised team and going back to back with them is not easy. The lads batted very well indeed, everyone chipping in. Our bowling is normally our strength, but we were just a little off  the pace this evening. All in all though the lads should be very happy with their performance this evening" He went on to say "I feel that the side is beginning to work together as a team and in general the spirit amongst the lads is very good"

Wednesday evening saw the rescheduled cup match against Green Lane.

Ben Rhydding won the toss and elected to bat on a pleasant summers evening.

An impressive 25 by Moursi laid the foundation of the Ben Rhydding innings. He was well supported by Aaron Moorehouse who shared in an opening stand of 38. Gus Hastings batted with much confidence and aggression and hit a well deserved 28 not out.

Ben Rhydding closed their innings on 98 - 8, certainly a good total.

In reply Green Lane were never allowed to keep up with the required run rate. Some accurate and aggressive bowling from openers Buckley and Masterson ensured that 98 was more than enough runs. All the bowlers stuck to a plan of accurate and tight bowling. Green Lane closed the innings on 48 - 8.

Coach AJ commented "It was an all round good performance from the boys this evening. Some sensible batting from our top order gave us the best opportunity to post a good score. The bowling and fielding was the best so far this season, with a couple of really good catches taken. I am very happy with how the lads played, not so happy that it cost me a round of drinks in the bar afterwards!"

Ben Rhydding take on Guiseley on Friday evening at home starting at 6.15. The team selected is posted on the web site.

Bank Holiday Monday saw BRCC host the Eddie Nelson Tounament.

In a 6 a side format with 5 overs per side,  BRCC were drawn in the same group as Calverley, North Leeds, Hall Park and Illingworth.

As hosts, BRCC opened the tournament with a game against Calverley. Calverley won the toss and elected to field. BRCC posted a very competitive 43. However, some failry inaccurate bowling and some  sloppy fielding, BRCC conceded to many runs and Calverley won the game with 6 balls to spare.

Game 2 saw BRCC play tournament favorites North Leeds. Batting first BRCC scored 45. In reply North Leeds could only 31.

Game 3 against Hall Park was a fairly one sided affair with BRCC restricting Hall park to 28. The chase never looked in doubt and BRCC cruised to victory with 3 balls to spare!!

Game 4 against Illingworth was a must win game. Batting first BRCC posted a very credible 43. With some excellent tight bowling and committed fielding, Illingwoth never looked like they were going to chase 42 and ended up falling short scoring 26.

Whilst BRCC went calmly about their business, Hall Park had managed to record wins over North Leeds, Illingworth and Calverley.

This meant a sudden death "bowl out" to decide the Group winners. After 2 rounds both sides had hit the stumps twice, on the 17 delivery of sudden death Hall Park clipped the base of the off stump and they went through as group winners.

Coach AJ said that "The boys have performed fantastically well to get to this point. It was disappointing to loose in a bowl off, but the lads should be extremely proud of what they have achieved today" He went on to say that "No Ben Rhydding team has ever made it this far in an Eddie Nelson competition and that the reason we did so well today is that the lads stuck to the basics of accurate bowling, sensible batting & committed fielding. Above all though, I am extremely happy with how the lads worked as a team"

 The Eddie Nelson Squad:

  • Josh Crane (wk)
  • Pat Bibby
  • Josh Stephens
  • Jake Duxbury
  • Harry Marshall
  • Nikki Corless
  • Jack Buckley

Friday saw the U13s loose at home to Ilkley.

Ben Rhydding won the toss and elected to field. Some wayward bowling from the usually reliable and accurate bowlers Buckley, Masterson and Stephens allowed the visitors to get off to a flying start.

This was not helped by some less than average fielding with the opposition amassing 29 runs in over throws and extras!

Ilkleys rapid progress was slowed a little by some accurate bowling from Hastings and Bibby. Never the less, Ilkley amassed 153 - 3, a more than competitive score.

In reply, and opening the innings, debutant Moursi looked confident with the bat but the the most notable performance came from Aaron Moorehouse who scored a sensible and well structured 29. He was well supported by Sam Rowley who shared a 32 run partnership with Moorehouse.

Ben Rhydding closed their innings on 79 - 4.

Team Manager AJ commented "the lads are more than capable players, but this evening they looked like startled rabbits in headlights. The morale in the changing room was surprisingly quite high afterwards, all the lads knew where we went wrong. We just have to do the basics well, have some self belief, and a win will follow"

Next week see the Under 13's make the short trip to Menston where it is hoped the lads can put together a solid all round performance both with bat and ball.

If you have not been selected please keep practicing hard and attend nets regularly. Even if you are not selected, please come and support your team mates, your support is always welcome!

There is competition for places and those that show commitment and improvement at nets will be given games.

There is a heavily congested fixture programme coming up in the next 2 weeks and its important to let AJ know if you are available for the matches on the 23, 26th and 27th May.
