BRCC started their 2009 season against Burley today (Sunday 26th) and what an absolute cracker it turned out to be. New skipper Pete Hewitt took charge of his new look side, containing only 4 players from last year’s team. Winning the toss (always the sign of a great Captain!) he elected to field first. The weather was lovely, the wicket was hard and the spectators were in for a treat! Now, bearing in mind that this was the first outing of the season and everyone was a little rusty, the boys started surprisingly well. The bowling and ground fielding were good, the backing up and the team spirit excellent, unfortunately catching was not! We missed 5 relatively easy chances before finally taking the first wicket when Captain H showed the way by bowling the Burley No. 2 batsmen after 50 mins of play and with the score on an impressive 96. Despite the long wait and frustration of so many dropped catches the team rallied, took another 3 wickets and restricted Burleys final tally to just 104 which given the short boundary and fast outfield, was not a huge total. Out strode Captain Hewitt with new signing Ben Thorpe at No. 2 and boy did they look the part! Confident in defense, decisive in attack and the running between the wickets was, quite simply, fantastic. They put on 51 for the first wicket before Pete H was 'unluckily' given out LBW on 31. Now he was understandably disappointed with the decision, but if there were ever a captains innings that was it! Out strode 6ft + local sporting superstar Dan Grange, another great new signing this season, who despite carrying a calf injury practically sprinted out to the wicket determined to ‘mash’ the Burley bowlers to all parts. As it turned out however, it was young Mr Thorpe who took charge, he maybe shorter in inches than Dan (as most of us are!) but what he lacks in height he more than makes up for in grit, determination, and ability. He played some sublime shots, and when not stroking the ball to the boundary was always looking for, and taking, quick singles. He guided the team to within sniffing distance of an amazing victory but just when the win looked sealed and with the score on 101 he holed out when looking for the winning runs. There is no justice in the great game of ours but what a fantastic effort from a young player who is destined to play an important role at the club. Dan, who had struggled to get going against some accurate Burley bowling was joined, for a ball, by another new BRCC acquisition Jake Duxbury who, for club and victory, took a big swing, missed, and was out LBW. Remember I said there was no justice! So with an over to go and 4 runs required in walked another debutant, Roam Hamilton. A couple of good balls, 1 quick single, 3 lofty swings and another single off the last ball and Burley had scraped a victory. Disappointed we all were, but what a game and what an achievement by our new look U15’s side. Keep up the great work boys!
